Wave Alternative When You Only Need the First Invoice Itself
Wave is a finance system for small businesses — invoicing plus bookkeeping, free on its Starter plan in the US and Canada, with a Pro tier and per-payment processing fees. If what you need is your first invoice, that is a system acquired to make a document. InvoiceCreator makes the document: no account, no books, nothing to reconcile later.

Disclosure: InvoiceCreator is our product. Wave's details are from Wave's pricing page, and the honest framing is that Wave is not really an invoicing tool with extras — it is accounting software whose invoicing is one module. For a US or Canadian freelancer who wants their books kept as they go, that integration is the value, and the free Starter plan is generous. The mismatch is at the very start: bookkeeping systems reward feeding them *everything*, so adopting one for a single invoice either leaves a half-kept set of books (worse than none) or quietly expands your admin from day one. Plenty of beginners grow into needing exactly Wave; almost none need it to produce invoice number one.
Choose InvoiceCreator if…
- You need this one document now, and your “accounting system” is currently a folder — which is fine at this stage.
- You are outside the US and Canada, where Wave does not operate.
- You want zero ongoing relationship: no account, no control panel, no plan emails.
Choose Wave if…
- You are US/Canada-based and want invoicing and bookkeeping to be the same system from the start.
- You will take card and bank payments through your invoices regularly.
- Your volume is already steady enough that real books pay for their upkeep.
One document, no system attached: create your invoice — and revisit the platform question when your folder of PDFs starts needing reports.
Two questions that decide it
Where are you? Wave operates in the US and Canada; a beginner anywhere else can close this tab — the platform is not available to you, and the maker is. What do you actually need this month? If the honest answer is “my books, kept properly, from the start”, Wave's integration is a genuine head start and its Starter plan is free. If the honest answer is “one invoice, for the logo job, by Friday”, then the bookkeeping system is a commitment in search of a problem: half-kept books are worse than a tidy folder, because the folder knows it is a folder. Beginners underestimate how long the folder stage legitimately lasts — for many freelancers it is the entire first year, and there is no shame and no penalty in it. Graduate when the folder starts costing you time, not when a signup page suggests you should.
If you do choose the folder stage, run it properly: one folder, your own numbering, a copy of every document you create, named so April-you can find February's work in seconds. The folder is not a failure to adopt software — kept well, it is the dataset your future bookkeeping (in Wave or anywhere else) will be built from, complete and in order.
